Welcome Inside the Rim, !

And welcome to June ... almost!! Depending on where you are coaching, there is a good chance that your offseason program will be kicking into high gear soon!

This is the time of year when players are made ... and I would also argue this is when coaches are made! As coaches, we need to make sure we are giving our guys the opportunities to get better. If we are allowed contact, we should be opening up the gym and letting them play. This is also the time we should be preparing for next season by learning, studying, and improving!

As players, use the summer wisely. Don't just play, play, play ... make sure you are working on your game and building up your weaknesses.

Basketball Coaches Academy Video Series :: Randy Brown on Defining and Establishing Player Roles

Attention Basketball Coaches:   Since 2003, Reaching Our Goal has helped raise over $53 million for youth, high school and college teams across the country. The best part...there's nothing for your players to sell, the entire effort takes just 10-15 minutes right from home, and they're only paid a small fee if they're successful for you.

Miami Heat Fast Break Offense
Miami Heat Fast Break Offense

[Part 1 of a 2-part Series]

The Miami Heat's fast break can be virtually unstoppable at times. The speed and athleticism of key players such as LeBron James and Dwyane Wade is simply breathtaking.

Interestingly enough, a football coach,  Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly, is the mastermind behind this offense.  Miami Head Coach Erik Spolestra got the idea for the Miami break while watching Kelly's Oregon Ducks practice their spread-option offense during the NBA Lockout back in 2011.

Miami Heat Secondary Break Options
Miami Heat Secondary Break Options

[Part 2 of a 2-Part Series]

When the primary break options are not available, the Heat shift to a 5 out set. The 5 out secondary break flows directly from their primary break.  The trail moves to the top of the key in order to balance the floor.

Keep in mind that any player can play any position in this offense.  Only run this offense if you have players that can play multiple positions.

Centaur Seasons
CENTAUR SEASONS: In a 'Carnival of Opportunity,' One of Our Own Shines in an All-Star Game

My junior year at Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales -- forty years ago this year -- we Centaurs ended our season at 6-and-11. A brutal campaign, as chronicled here at HoopsU.com, it boasted, so to speak, a nine-game losing streak and defeats by ... 2 ...  12 ... 7 ...  2 ... 15 ...  15 ... 5 ...  29 ... 36 ...  6 and 18 points.

(Click a number, any number, to read about each at CENTAUR SEASONS. Time for just one? "I CRIED FOR 15-20 MINUTES" tells all you need to know.)

The saving grace is that we went 4-and-2 over the last six games. Our coach, Jack Saboda, somehow convinced us at 2-and-9 to put the ghastly opprobrium of the first eleven games behind us - forget it, fellas  --  and look only forward, our season begun anew. And so we did.

Practice defensively rebounding the free throw attempt. As coaches, we remind our players to 'rebound', but do we practice the situation? This drill is designed to help you teach your players to stop the shooting team from getting a second chance because they failed to block out correctly.

By: Jeff Osterman
This zone quick hitter creates an open jump shot by first overloading one side of the zone and then using a ball reversal to get the defense pulled out of position.

Rebounding is an essential part of winning basketball games and it often isn't emphasized enough by basketball coaches. Being a great rebounder is a skill but also a mentality. These 10 tips will help you build better rebounders.

Work on making the outlet pass and filling the lane in a fast break situation and work on receiving the outlet pass and quickly dribbling downcourt. The Outlet and Fill Drill also develops a variety of skills necessary for an effective fast break such as passing, jump stops, and finishing.
