I also just added a post to the blog where I share a video from the folks at The NOC. They just released a short video on John Wall where he talks about his upbringing and his coming-out party at the 2007 Reebok Breakout Challenge basketball camp. As a new season is fast approaching and you will soon be teaching players your team offense, here are 4 tips from UNC women's coach Sylvia Hatchell to keep in mind: - Keep offense simple. This bears repeating--if you're not careful, you'll overwhelm your players with too much information. It's better to do two things well than six things poorly.
- Teach offense in stages.
When teaching a new offense or a new play, start without defenders. Place your players in the designated spots and walk through everything slowly. When they get it, they can run through it at half-speed, then at game speed. Only at this point should you introduce defenders. Inexperienced players will find offenses confusing at first. Some players will catch on fast, but others won't. Just as you stress patience to them in running a half-court offense, stress patience to yourself as they learn.
- Reinforce the fundamentals. As your players practice team offense, reinforce all the fundamentals. Remind them to make pass fakes, to catch the ball in a jump stop, to change speeds when they're trying to get open, to call for the ball in the post, to give a target with their hands, and so on.
- Correct mistakes when they happen.
Stop play to point out whenever someone makes a mistake. Don't go overboard and stop play every 10 seconds, or they'll never learn the offense, but part of your job is to correct players when they need correcting. If you wait until later to point out mistakes, the value of the lesson is gone.

Basketball: Much More Than Just A Game
We're excited to offer this book from Coach Larry McKenzie. I'll be doing a review soon but I can tell you that it's a great book for players and parents as they journey together in the game. There is a lot of advice for student-athletes they will find beneficial as they progress through the levels and potentially into college basketball.
Larry McKenzie, the only coach to win four back-to-back state titles in the 100 year history of the Minnesota State Boys Basketball tournament is sharing his success strategies for "winning" on the court and in life. Basketball: Much More Than Just a Game is a must read for young athletes and their parents navigating the game. Incorporating 10 life lessons, Coach McKenzie shows why BASKETBALL is merely a metaphor and a tool that can be used to transform lives.
