Feeding the Post Player

A great many players have a real difficulty passing into the low post. A little bit of pressure and they lose the confidence and ability to get the ball inside. As coaches, are we teaching how to feed the post? Are we drilling on how to do it successfully? These tips will help your players learn to better 'feed the post':

  1. The common-sense tip: only pass when the post player is open!
  2. Only pass to the player posting up if you can see both the defender and the hands of the post player.
  3. Always throw the pass away from the post defender.
  4. Create an open passing lane by utilizing pass fakes.
  5. Make use of the dribble to create a better passing angle.
  6. Only pass into the low post if you are below the free throw line extended. Post passes from the top are too easily defended, deflected, and stolen.
  7. Make quick, sharp passes. In other words, if you have to take the time to wind up and throw it, don't!

In-Season Competitive Skill Development Drills
By: TJ Jones
Continue to develop skills during the season with these drills that focus on ball handling, shooting, and finishing. These competitive basketball drills are short, intense and designed to challenge players.
Trapping Drill
Work on the fundamentals of trapping the ballhandler in the frontcourt and trapping/containing the dribbler in the backcourt. A nice drill for teaching the basics of trapping out of man-to-man or zone defenses.
Creating Consistency in Scouting
By: Collin Wright
Place great emphasis on your scouting reports as you prepare for upcoming games on your schedule. Whether it's the first game of the year or a familiar conference opponent, go through the same routine to prepare your players before every game so that they have the information necessary to understand your game plan -- both the how and why of what you're going to try to accomplish on the court.
Intensity Shooting Drill
Teach players intensity and effort in this shooting drill by having them attempt to make as many shots as possible in one minute.
Curl the Line Play
By: Jeff Osterman
This baseline out of bounds play is simple to install and can be run against both man-to-man or zone defense and is also a great last second play option.
Dribble Follow Drill
If you run a motion offense and look to replace a player that has dribbled away from another player, the Dribble Follow Drill will teach a couple of possible scoring options.
Flow Ball Screen Transition Offense
By: Steve Hardin
The Flow Ball Screen Transition Offense is a basketball offense that can be used in a variety of ways. It is most effective as a transition offense or secondary fast break. It can also be run with great effectiveness as a series of set plays. The use of a variety of on-ball screens creates multiple scoring opportunities and is often difficult to defend in a transition setting.
1-4 X Zone Offense
By: Jeff Osterman
The 1-4 X Zone Offense is simple enough to run as a quick hitter but may also be run as a continuity set. The ultimate goal of the 1-4 X Zone Offense is middle penetration to create an advantage situation. This penetration may also allow for the opportunity to kick out for a 3-point attempt.
