Preparing for the Playoffs: Work on Team Weaknesses
We are reaching that time of the season -- playoffs are right around the corner! This is the time to begin preparing. Over the next several weeks, work on eliminating the most glaring weaknesses that you see within your team.
Make a list of team weaknesses and start working on them during practice. Order them with the most flawed weaknesses at the top. Your list could look something like this:
- Poor defensive transition. (Work on sprinting back, pressuring the outlet receiver, offensive rebounding.)
- Lack of penetration against zone defenses. (Practice against zones. Re-drill on our zone offense sets).
- Bad shot selection. (Reminders of what is a bad shot, refocus on our offensive sets and movements.)
Obviously your list will look different. Just determine about 3-5 areas of weakness that can be cleaned up as you head into the playoffs. When you lose in the playoffs, your season is over. It's never fun to lose, but it's less enjoyable when you lose for reasons that can be easily corrected with some practice and effort.
I think in the coming weeks I will attempt to put an entire article together that details areas you work on and focus on as you prepare for the playoffs. So, be on the lookout for that coming soon to The U!

Fistitude: Five Lessons for Leading Any Team to Success
The men's basketball team from a small private high school finds itself struggling through a dreary season, when their coach is called away to attend to a family member's illness. Enter a wise and mysterious janitor, who not only accepts the reins of leadership for the team during that absence, but soon becomes a mentor to the team, especially to a talented young man named Matthew who is essentially raising himself after he and his father moved into town following the loss of his mother.
Through a series of five lessons woven into the frustrations and excitement of the season, the janitor offers lessons that correspond to each finger in a fist, and helps the team to accomplish their goals and become leaders themselves.
