Random Thoughts About Post Play
from George Raveling
  1. You win with centers.
  2. The best offenses are built from the inside out. Logic dictates that. The closer you are to the basket, the better your chances are of making it.
  3. If the post man can shoot 48 percent or better, he should be one of your primary shooters. Otherwise, use him as a passer or screener. Statistics show that a team will score at least one point for every three times the ball goes inside. You must emphasize 'to be a three point player'. We should ask for the maximum offensive reward, and this is three points. He must be thinking three points every single time he gains possession of the ball.
  4. Teach by progression. Teach nothing new until what has been taught previously has been learned and perfected.
  5. Your post should be one of your top three in free throw percentage.
  6. Use video tape replays. We video tape our practices and, of course, our games. The film never lies.
George Raveling is a former college men's basketball coach. He was the head coach at Washington State University (1972-1983), the University of Iowa (1983-1986), and the University of Southern California (1987-1994).

5 Principles for Basketball Success
Whether you are a basketball coach or player, do you want to find greater success in basketball? Employ the following 5 principles and you will be on your way to more wins and more success. If these 5 principles are a part of your foundation and philosophy, you will be able to withstand the bumps on the journey to success.
Box Diagonal
The Box Diagonal out of bounds play is run out of the box set and utilizes a diagonal backscreen to create an open layup opportunity.
Individual V-Cut Drill
Learn how to make a fundamentally sound V-cut. This drill incorporates footwork, 1-on-1 moves, and shooting in a way that is useful in developing the ability to get open and being able to make a scoring move once you have the basketball in your hands.
Doublestack Doublescreen
Run a simple set play from a doublestack set that is designed to get a layup. This quick hitter utilizes a on-ball screen and a staggered or double backscreen to open up a player cutting across the lane.
Stop the Star with Offense
Devising a defensive game plan to stop or slow the opposing star is essential. You can, and should, stop the star with your offense as well.
3-Player Competitive Rebounding Drill
Have the players go strong after the rebound and provide a competitive, game-like situation so that the players will get some opposition as they go up for the rebound.
