Very, very soon I am going to be completely updating and upgrading HoopsU.com. There are many reasons why but the biggest is that the new version will be much easier to update. And that is great news for you!
I will admit that there are times I'm going to add something and then I wind up holding off on it because of time involved. I simply don't like my current setup and will be redoing the site.
With that said, is there anything you are looking for from HoopsU.com? Anything that can be added, improved upon, etc? Feel free to let me know by replying to this email or using our speedy contact form.

9 Thoughts on Beating a Zone Defense
from Gene Bartow
- Patience. You must attack zone defenses using patience. If you don't, the defense will never foul.
- Shot Selection.
- Offensive Rebounding. We want four people going for the offensive rebounds. It is more difficult to box out from a zone.
- Instill Confidence. As a coach you can instill confidence by the fact that they are using a zone because they don't have the ability to guard you man-to-man. Have confidence. We are better than they are. You can't let your players become fearful of zones.
- Overload. No matter what type of zone you are attacking, you must overload.
- Penetration. You must emphasize penetration. A team that is just going to pass it around the horn is going to have problems.
- You can screen a zone defense. Be ready to set screens.
- Any time that you can get the ball into the center of the zone, get the ball there. The player can look weakside and usually get the 10'-12' shot.
- I never talk about any kind of offense without mentioning the fast break. I love fast break basketball. I think that you can get layups off of it. We work on it every day. The transition game is such a vital part of our game.
Gene Bartow coached 34 years at 6 universities. Bartow succeeded John Wooden at UCLA and left after 2 seasons to create the basketball and athletic programs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he coached for 18 years. |
