New Article: Advice on Team Offense

Advice on Team Offense: from 'Indiana Basketball by Branch McCracken.

From time to time, I will share some basketball coaching information that goes way back! I have a lot of old basketball coaching books loaded with a ton of great information. I find it interesting to see how things have changed (or not changed) over time -- I hope you will find these articles interesting as well! I also hope you will learn something new!

From 'Indiana Basketball':
I have discovered from conducting clinics in the States, Japan, and Europe that coaches are more interested in team offense, systems, and scoring plays than in any other phase of the game. Most coaches, particularly young ones, go to coaching schools or clinics and patiently sit through the lectures and demonstrations of fundamentals, waiting for the coach to get to the discussions of plays and team offense. They seem to believe with Mr. Shakespeare that "the play's the thing." They make a big mistake. I cannot emphasize too strongly that the backbone of any system is based on well-taught, well-mastered fundamentals.

Some Random Coaching Tips...

  1. A Coach must be fair and have respect. A Coach cannot get everyone to like him/her.
    -Ara Pareghian
  2. Create respect by being honest, working hard and dealing with players fairly. A kid knows he is going to get a chance when he earns it.
    -Bob Knight
  3. You can tell an awful lot about a basketball team in watching their bench - Championship teams benches are into the game as much as players on the court.
    -Pat Summitt
  4. Teamwork - key phrase "Whatever it takes." You do what you do to make the team successful.
    -Chuck Knoll
  5. There are three types of baseball players: those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened.
    -Tommy Lasorda

Flash Middle Overload
Put pressure on the zone defense with this continuity zone offense by flashing players into the middle of the zone and overloading one side.

3 on 3 Survival
Work on team and individual defensive skills in a competitive 3-on-3 setting. By nature of the drill, players are encouraged to work hard and competitively. Players will also learn to work together offensively and further develop their individual skills within the team concept.
