Welcome,
Coach John Wooden (1910-2010)

Do we have Coach's attitude today?
"As I grow older, I appreciate things that I didn't appreciate much when I was younger. I am thankful more than I used to be. I've been reasonably healthy, and I feel blessed. And each morning I can think, this is going to be a good day!"

In this Wooden Edition of 'Inside the Rim':
  • 99 Wisdoms from Wooden: Daily Woodenism's for 99 days.
  • Basketball IQ: Coach Wooden's 8 Suggestions for Succeeding
  • What's New at the U.

99 Wisdoms from Wooden

In honor of Coach Wooden - his life, his coaching, his wisdom, his example - I have added a new page to Hoops U. 99 Wisdoms from Wooden is a 99-day adventure into Coach's thoughts, quotes, and maxims. Each day, for 99 days, I will be posting a new quote from Coach. Some you will know and some may be new -- either way, learn something each and every day!

8 Suggestions for Succeeding from Coach John Wooden
  1. Fear no opponent. Respect every opponent.
  2. Remember, it's the perfection of the smallest details that make big things happen.
  3. Keep in mind that hustle makes up for many a mistake.
  4. Be more interested in character than reputation.
  5. Be quick, but don't hurry.
  6. Understand that the harder you work, the more luck you will have.
  7. Know that valid self-analysis is crucial for improvement.
  8. Remember that there is no substitute for hard work and careful planning. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

The Latest Inside...

High Pick with Screen Option
This 'High Pick' box set play is a difficult quick hitter to defend. It utilizes a pick and roll and a couple of cuts/screens to create kick-out options on the middle drive. There is also a built in option for a player to either cut or set a doublescreen.

1-on-3 Defensive Drill
Teach a single defender to guard against three offensive players in a fast break situation. This situation may not present itself very often, but it does occur. It is good to have been drilled in this situation.

56 Made Competitive Shooting Drill
Have players shoot from a wide range of spots on the basketball floor in a competitive situation.

Slash High-Low
The Slash High-Low zone offense quick hitter is a special play to get a basket for a wing player slashing through the zone.

Shrink
The Shrink baseline out of bounds play is designed to force the zone defense to 'shrink' into the lane thereby opening up an outside shooter.

1-3-1 Rotational Zone Offense
The 1-3-1 Rotational Zone Offense is designed to keep the offensive players moving. Teams will often do a good job of moving the ball against a zone defense, but they do a poor job of moving players. If you have ever seen your team stand around against a zone, this offense may be just what you need.
