   Inside the Rim :: 15-November-2010

Welcome,
Coach John Wooden (1910-2010)

I now have 68 days of the 99 Wisdoms from Wooden. I'm not getting them up every day but don't worry, there will be 99 when all is said and done! You can read all the Wooden quotes and maxims up to this point on the 99 Wisdoms page at Hoops U.

From Day 68: "We can give without loving, but we can't love without giving. In fact, love is nothing unless we give it to someone."

In this Edition of 'Inside the Rim':
  • 2 New Books On the Way...
  • Basketball IQ: 11 Basic Defense Rules

Enjoy!

2 New Books on the way!

In my last email, I mentioned a new book was on the way. Well now, 2 new books are on the way!

The book previously mentioned is now almost finished. It has taken some time to complete because it is going to be a beautifully bound hardcover book -- and I want to make sure it is up to HoopsU.com standards! This book is geared to the athlete and will help them track their progress and success, set goals, and basically get inside themselves to become better players. Look for it to be released for pre-order soon ... and as an 'Inside the Rim' newsletter subscriber, you will have the opportunity to save even more than the general public!

The other book on the way will be released on December 1, 2010. This is an eBook with more than 100 pages of 'Insider' information; that is, information available only to members of HoopsUInsider.com! It's loaded with plays, drills, articles, and tips -- 30 in all -- that will help you achieve greater success as a basketball coach! There will not be a pre-order for this eBook but as a newsletter subscriber, you will get a special deal!

Again, keep an eye here in the next couple of weeks...

Inside the Rim Basketball IQ

11 Basic Defense Rules
from J.D. Barnett
  1. Contest every shot.
  2. Retreat to the ball-line. Be even with the ball all over the floor.
  3. Do not allow any penetrating pass (any pass that moves the ball closer to the basket.)
  4. Allow non-penetrating passes.
  5. Always see the ball and your man. If you must lose sight of one, let it be your man.
  6. Attempt to intercept all lob or bounce passes.
  7. Jump to the ball on every pass.
  8. Maintain the proper sag position in relation to the ball. (Helpside -- be ready to help teammates.)
  9. Trap the ball any time it goes to the low post. Always double the ball in the scoring area.
  10. Maintain maximum pressure on the ball at all times.
  11. NEVER foul a player who is not an offensive threat.
J.D. Barnett is a former head basketball coach at several Division I institutions, the most high-profile being Virginia Commonwealth University, where his most notable win consisted of a buzzer-beater NCAA Tournament win over Jim Calhoun's Northeastern Huskies. He is also well known for being a mentor of Tubby Smith. Most notably, Barnett taught Smith the philosophy of ball-line defense, which is a strategy that requires all defenders to stay between the line of the ball and the baseline. The Latest Inside...

How to Break the Press
You probably have a press break offense in your system, but do you or your players really KNOW how to break the press? These 6 principles can be applied when attempting to break any press defense.

One Dribble Shooting Drill
Develop the skill of shooting off of one hard, quick dribble. A great shooting drill to get off a lot of shots in a short timeframe.

Defending the Dribbler with Momentum
Work on defending the dribbler who has already begun dribbling upcourt.

Post Jump Stop Drill
Practice the skill of executing a jump when receiving a pass in the post. This allows the post player the option of using either foot as the pivot foot when making a move. This drill also helps the post player think about and anticipate potential scoring moves.

Boot Camp Circuit
Develop overall conditioning, footwork, and agility with this circuit of basketball-related movements.

Mikan Drill VariationMikan Drill Variation
This variation of the ever-popular Mikan Drill adds rebounding and finishing strong rather than just shooting left and right side layups.
