   Inside the Rim :: 20-October-2010

Welcome,
Coach John Wooden (1910-2010)

We are now through Day 63 of the 99 Wisdoms from Wooden. Read all the Wooden quotes and maxims up to this point on the 99 Wisdoms page at Hoops U.

From Day 63: "We are all equal in that we can all strive to become the best we are capable of becoming. We can always improve but we shouldn't compare ourselves to others. We get in trouble when we start trying to measure up to someone else."

New Hoops U. Book Coming Soon!

Just in time for basketball season -- I am putting the finishing touches on a brand new book!

This new book (still deciding on the title) is going to be a bit different than my previous 2 books, The Complete Basketball Strength & Speed Program and The Mentally Tough Shooting Workout. This new book is specifically for players so they can set goals and track their basketball and mental progress ... in essence it is a guided journal / goal-setting book. It is a great tool for basketball players to learn more about themselves and to dig deeper mentally.

This new book will come in a beautiful hard cover with customization options available. The release date is near but yet to be determined.

Keep an eye on your inbox for more information and pre-order specials only for you, an 'Inside the Rim' subscriber!

Hoops U :: The Blog

If you've been around Hoops U. long enough, you know that I'm not one to blog on a consistent basis. I suppose what I want to say, I put into articles, plays, and drills. I will, of course, utilize Twitter and Facebook to share real-time updates and some random thoughts. There are, however, times where I do want to share something that doesn't quite work as a tweet or facebook post ... which is why I've set up a new blog using tumblr.

At Hoops U :: The Blog, I will sharing those random thoughts that pop into my head from time to time. I will also be sharing quotes, tips, video's, audio, and more.

Check out Hoops U :: The Blog when you get a chance!!

Coaching Points when Teaching the Layup...

These are great tips for youth players and might seem a little basic for older levels. However, as you start getting into the season and watching games at all levels, keep an eye on just how many layups are missed. You might be surprised! Besides, we all need to remember the fundamentals!

  • The backboard is your friend!
  • Use the backboard so the ball can drop into the rim from above. Trying to roll the ball over the rim often causes the ball to roll right back out.
  • See the ball in the rim after shooting.
  • Concentrate on the same spot on the backboard.
  • Shoot high and soft.
  • On power layups, power it up strong then release with a light touch. (for some players, this requires a lot of practice).
The layup is a 100 percent shot. You cannot get any closer to the basket, therefore, it must be made. Don't neglect the layup because YOU think it's easy ... it may not be so easy for some players.

4 Passes Drill
Improve passing, communicating, and conditioning with this competitive, timed drill. Players will practice 4 types of passes in a fast and fun passing drill.

Big Man Out
A sideline out of bounds play designed to draw the opponent's big man away from the basket to create an easy scoring opportunity.

Post Kick-Out Drill
Work on passing out of the post when double teamed. The perimeter player works on passing and relocating while the post player works on executing a timely and accurate kick-out pass.

Short and Long Passing Drill
Work on short and long passes in a game speed setting while also developing focus and concentration.

Pivot and Score Drill
Work on moving to meet the pass, pivoting away from the defense on the reception, making a move and scoring.

10 Spot Post Shot Drill
Improve a post player's jump shooting ability by working on game shots from game spots. Also a great drill for youth basketball players.
